# Getting fields onto a page

A signature box has to end up somewhere on the page, and there are exactly two ways it gets there.
**The document chooses, not the request.** If your PDF carries [text tags](/concepts/text-tags),
they win and [detection](/concepts/field-detection) does not run. If it carries none, the page is
measured. Nothing merges the two, and there is no flag to make it.

Which one you want follows from whether the documents are the same every time. A pack you send a
hundred times is a template whose fields were placed once. A contract generated per employee —
conditional clauses, a page count that varies with them — cannot reuse a template and has nothing
dependable to detect either, because what is on page three this time is on page four the next.
That is what tags are for.
